How to say “I’m kidding” in Thai?
Thai people love telling jokes, teasing, smiling and laughing. Well, I guess Thai humour and western humour might not be 100% the same.
If you want to say a joke or tease someone and end with “I’m kidding.” In Thai you can say
“phûut lên” (พูดเล่น) or “lór lên” (ล้อเล่น).
“phûut” (พูด) means “to speak”
“lór” (ล้อ) means “to tease” or “to make fun of”
“lên” (เล่น) means “to play”
For example:
A : phǒm* hěn nǔu nai bâan khun!
ผม เห็น หนู ใน บ้าน คุณ
I saw a rat in your house!
B : jing rěr?
จริง เหรอ?
Really?
A : phǒm* phûut lên
ผม พูด เล่น
I’m kidding.
*“phǒm” (ผม) means “I” for a male. Females will use “chǎn” (ฉัน)
The word “lên” (เล่น) is very practical and can be use with some other word and make the word means “for fun” or “for pleasure”
“nâng lên” (นั่งเล่น) = to sit and enjoy the atmosphere or environment
“norn lên” (นอนเล่น) = to lay down for pleasurable purpose but not sleep
“duu lên” (ดูเล่น) = to watch something for pleasure
“dern lên” (เดินเล่น) = to have a walk and enjoy the atmosphere or environment
“wîng lên” (วิ่งเล่น) = to run just for fun (Mostly use with kids or animals)
“wâay nám lên” (ว่ายน้ำเล่น) = to swim or play in the water
“khàp rót lên” (ขับรถเล่น) = to drive and enjoy the atmosphere or environment
“nâng rót lên” (นั่งรถเล่น) = be a passenger in a car or transportation vehicle for enjoy the atmosphere or environment
For example:
chǎn chôrp dern lên nai hâang.
ฉัน ชอบ เดิน เล่น ใน ห้าง
I like to have a walk in a mall
yàa hâi dèk dèk wîng lên bon thà-nǒn
อย่า ให้ เด็ก เด็ก วิ่ง เล่น บน ถนน
Don’t let children run on the street.
mûea-waan-níi phǒm pai khàp rót lên rôrp rôrp mueang
เมื่อวานนี้ ผม ไป ขับ รถ เล่น รอบ รอบ เมือง
Yesterday I went for a ride around the town.
